The Worm Hunters – a discussion of form – August 14th, 2013

The Worm Hunters
with director Randall Wood
Wednesday, 14 August 2013

If you loved the AFI/Sydney Film Festival doco winner Rare Chicken Rescue, you don’t want to miss this special screening of Randall Wood’s equally entertaining Worm Hunters. Screened in collaboration with National Science Week 2013, The Worm Hunters tells a story about ecology, taxonomy, eccentric people, obsession and, above all, spectacular earthworms.
Yet with all that, Ozdox is showing this film primarily because of its form. In this session we will ask you, the viewer, to decide whether this documentary’s use of animated graphics, fast cutting, layered editing and multi-character stories enhances or devalues its mission of revealing important information about one of nature’s most maligned, undervalued and forgotten animals…
Randall who has a conservatorium degree in music composition and performance believes that “sound is the king and queen” and great music “is the heart and soul” of a film. The brief he gave composer Brett Aplin was to create a score for a “global James Bond spy drama” — so how does such a sonic “soul” fit with serious documentary purpose?

In a Turkish headquarters the world’s top earthworm scientists concoct a plan to find and name their ultimate discovery. Nothing will stop them as they travel to all corners of the world with spades, GPS worm locators and secret worm outing fluids to unearth their prize. But love turns savage when things don’t go to plan and the worm gets the upper hand. An epic adventure into an underground science and an unstoppable passion.
