The Essay and the Poetic Documentary

Why might you use the Essay or Poetic forms of Documentary? What does this form offer the filmmaker? What do these films offer audiences? How can these films be made? Are there any rules?

Chaired by Associate Professor Gillian Leahy (My Life Without Steve, Baxter and Me), alongside Ben Tyler – film student (Going Home), who shows that you can make a very short evocative essay film; Dr Hart Cohen – Associate Professor, Director Research, School of Humanities and Communication Arts, UWS (Mr Strehlow’s Films) who explains where it all began with Chris Marker and Sans Soleil, and Dr Bettina Frankham – lecturer, UTS (How Many Ways To Say You), who explores the poetic and  how it is now expressing itself in new online forms of documentary.
