WEDS 10th July • SPECIAL SEMINAR

LIGHTS, CAMERA … ACTION!
Making and using films for social change:
what works?

Alex Kelly, an Alice Springs filmmaker, activist and producer with Big hART, will present thoughts from her recent Churchill Fellowship study of social issue documentary outreach and impact campaigns in the UK and the US. She will show excerpts of some remarkable films and discuss their success (or failure) in supporting and generating campaigns for social impact. She has gathered evidence from filmmakers, outreach and impact producers, funders, NGOs and social change campaigners.
Social movements of all kinds use films as tools to advance their campaigns and in some instances films can be used to encourage campaigns to start up. Films and media are great tools for campaigners; however, the question is how to harness the inspiration that people feel as they leave the cinema and build community to respond to these issues. What savvy is required to place the films in particular arenas to leverage change?
Alex will invite the audience to discuss the way filmmakers have dealt with issues including: funding and backing, making films that reach beyond ‘the choir’, the use of celebrities, the necessity of fine story telling techniques, the filmmaker-campaigner relationship, and the potential of film in lobbying and building community action.

This seminar is for those who are interested in working with film for social change, collaborating with movements, looking at new ways to finance films, reach audiences and make an impact and how artistically accomplished, personally engaged filmmaking can succeed in this arena. It is also for film lovers who simply want to find out more.

FILMMAKERS, ACTIVISTS AND VIEWERS • WE INVITE YOU TO SHARE OPINIONS AND EXPERIENCES, MEET POTENTIAL COLLABORATORS & FIND OUT HOW TO MAKE USEFUL CONTACTS.
