BIG BOYS GONE BANANAS!* Screening + Q&A – 15 August 2012

We are fortunate and honoured to present BIG BOYS GONE BANANAS! by visiting Swedish filmmaker Frederik Gertten, followed by a discussion with him about his film and, more generally, about the making and financing of issue-based documentaries in an international context.

Synopsis

BIG BOYS GONE BANANAS!* is a documentary is about freedom of speech and what happens to a documentary filmmaker when they take on a large corporation.

In 2009, 3 years earlier, Fredrik Gertten made the film BANANAS! which investigates the successful lawsuit by 12 Nicaraguan banana workers against the Dole corporation for knowingly using dangerous pesticides that caused them a wide range of health issues.  The international fruit company not only tried to prevent BANANAS! from being screened to the public at various festivals and other venues, it also sued the filmmaker.  So Gerten picked up his camera and began documenting the entire affair -becoming himself the target of media spin, PR scare tactics, lawsuits, and corporate bullying.

BIG BOYS GONE BANANAS!* not only authenticates and underscores the information and case presented in the first film, it also reveals the lengths to which some powerful corporations will go to manipulate and control public opinion. It also illustrates how these corporations can obfuscate issues brought to light in documentary films like this one.

BIG BOYS GONE BANANAS!* has been invited to the Melbourne International Film Festival, and is about to open in cinemas in the US. However, this may be the film’s one and only Sydney screening.
